These unique bookmarks are handmade by volunteers and staff of the House of Refuge in Bulgaria. The mission of the House of Refuge is to assist girls “at risk” in finding hope and a future by developing life skills to help them reach their full potential as a valuable part of their society.
Currently, the House of Refuge team reaches out to a state-run home for delinquent youth and trains the girls in the group how to embroider these bookmarks as a means to providing an income. Prior to finding shelter in the House of Refuge, the girls were victims of sexual abuse and forced prostitution. A house will soon be remodeled for the girls to have a safe place to continue their education and receive vocational training.
