Educating Girls

Education is one of the most critical areas of empowerment for women. Ensuring girls receive basic education is a sure way to give them more power over their lives. The right of girls to education is a basic human right enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child and also the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. However, millions of women throughout the world never have a chance to learn to read, write and add numbers. They sign papers with their thumbprint.

Many village girls in south India are unable to attend school because of a lack of income as is true in many rural areas of the developing world.   Even if they have had an opportunity to attend an elementary school, once they reach the age of 11 or 12 they are sent to work as servants in homes, on fish farms or in factories to supplement the family income.  By not finishing their education the cycle of poverty continues to another generation. Eternal Threads is committed to helping ensure that women and children in our projects have access to education.

The purchase of a small size Sofi tote doubles the family income of a woman for nearly a week and educates a girl for two months.
